COLD WEATHER OUTFITS

7 Cold Weather Outfits for Hockey and Football Games

A coat worth keeping, boots that earn their place, and no more feeling dressed for two climates at once.

See the seven outfit formulas

Updated October 10, 2026. Styling ideas informed by my rink experience; no claim of testing the pictured garments.

Cold weather outfits flat lay with a rose puffer, burgundy sweater, black jeans, winter boots, gloves and a knit hat.

Rose quilting, a wine-dark knit, and black boots with some substance: the palette is soft, but the outfit has somewhere to go.

Cold weather outfits need to work for the cold part of the day and the warm places in between. A bulky lining can feel reassuring at the door and miserable ten minutes into the car ride. I want to stay warm without spending the rest of the day wishing I could take my entire outfit off.

My priorities are fairly settled: a good coat that is worth the money and can last for years, cute boots that keep my feet comfortable near the ice, and a hat. Especially the hat. Pink, burgundy, rose, and black make the practical pieces feel like me.

Those preferences grew out of hours around hockey rinks. I first wrote about what ice hockey moms wear to stay warm on Ice Hockey Moms. Here, I am taking that experience beyond the boards, into football sidelines and the coffee stops that happen around game day.

These seven outfit formulas reuse a small set of pieces. Start with the coat and boots you trust, then choose inner layers you can adjust and a color you enjoy seeing near your face.

THE LAYERING RULES

Warmth I Can Adjust, Style I Can Repeat

A base layer manages moisture, an insulating layer holds warmth, and an outer layer protects against the conditions. That distinction is more useful than putting on several thick things and hoping for the best. REI explains the role of each layer; the amount you need depends on the weather and how active you will be.

My style rules sit on top of that practical foundation:

Buy for the Seated Fit

A coat must work on a bench and in a chair, not just in a mirror. Check the shoulders, lap, and closures with your layers underneath.

Make One Layer Removable

Choose an opening layer you can take off without rebuilding the outfit. A thick lining attached to trousers gives you fewer options.

Repeat the Dark Base

Black trousers or dark denim let pink and burgundy move between looks. You do not need a different pair of pants for every sweater.

Choose the Boots First

The route and time in the cold decide the footwear. Then choose trouser hems and the rest of the outfit around it.

THE OUTFIT WALKTHROUGH

Seven Cold Weather Outfits, One More Useful Wardrobe

LOOK 01 / COLD RINK MORNINGS

1. Rose Puffer Coat and Black Straight-Leg Jeans

The formula: Rose knee-length puffer + slim black knit + black straight-leg jeans + warm boots + burgundy hat

A rose puffer over black is the rink outfit I would build first. The coat brings the color; the slim knit and straight jeans keep the rest simple. A burgundy hat gives the pink a little depth, rather than making everything match like a boxed set.

A great coat is one place I am willing to spend thoughtfully. I want something I can reach for over several winters, not a purchase that looks convincing for one photograph. That does not mean the highest price wins. I would look at the stitching, closures, care requirements, pockets, and how the coat feels with the layers I plan to wear.

For rink time, I like the idea of coverage that continues when I sit down. The tradeoff is that a longer coat can feel restrictive. Try sitting, walking up a step, and reaching forward before deciding the fit is right. A coat that only works when I stand perfectly still is asking too much of me.

Charmed Tip: Try the coat over your real winter outfit, with the pockets in use. Check that it closes without compressing the layers and that the hood and collar do not fight the hat.

LOOK 02 / ERRANDS AND CAR-TO-STORE DAYS

2. Black Puffer Coat and Rose Fine-Knit Sweater

The formula: Black puffer + rose fine-knit sweater + dark straight jeans + pink beanie + weather-appropriate boots

The inner lining is where some winter outfits lose me. I have worn layers that felt bulky before I even left the house, then became too hot in the car. By the time I reached the next stop, I was already negotiating with my clothes.

For an errand-heavy day, I would start with a less bulky knit in rose and let the outer coat do more of the work while I am outside. Black jeans or dark denim keep it easy; the pink hat makes the outfit feel chosen. Before driving, while parked, I can adjust or remove the coat rather than trying to wrestle with it later.

This is a short-transition outfit, not a promise that one thin sweater will keep everyone comfortable through a long outdoor wait. If the day changes, the layers need to change with it. I would rather carry an extra layer than be committed to a heavy lining I cannot take off.

Charmed Tip: Do a seated fit check before leaving. If the waistband, sleeves, or lining already feel crowded, solve that at home rather than hoping the car ride will improve them.

LOOK 03 / ERRANDS, COFFEE AND CASUAL WEEKENDS

3. Rose Matching Sweats and a Black Puffer

The formula: Rose crewneck sweatshirt + matching joggers + black puffer + pink boots + ribbed hat

This is much closer to how I want a casual winter day to feel. A rose sweatshirt and matching joggers, a black puffer, and the pink boots. Comfortable enough for the car, coordinated enough for coffee, and no stiff trousers asking me to sit a certain way.

I would look for a set with a smooth, substantial fabric, neatly finished seams, cuffs that recover their shape, and an elastic waistband that sits comfortably without digging in. Matching is only the beginning. The top and bottom should also match in fabric weight and color, with pockets that do not pull the pants out of shape.

I do not want to solve a bulky-lining problem by buying the thickest fleece set available. A less heavily brushed fabric is worth considering for indoor-heavy days, while a warmer set may suit more time in the cold. Neither is automatically better quality. I would check the actual fiber blend, care instructions, and fit rather than trusting the word luxury in a listing.

Charmed Tip: Sit, bend, and reach in the full set before keeping it. Check knee room, waistband comfort, and whether the sweatshirt bunches under the coat. Jogger cuffs should meet the boots without exposing the ankle.

Rose from sweatshirt to jogger, a black puffer around the shoulders, and a coffee stop that does not require a waistband negotiation.

LOOK 04 / OUTDOOR FOOTBALL GAMES

4. Football Game Outfit: Pink Knit and Burgundy Beanie

The formula: Pink knit + black trousers + black winter coat + burgundy beanie + insulated boots

Hats are my overlooked winter essential. They are easy to treat as the thing you grab at the door, but I would rather make one part of the outfit from the beginning. A burgundy beanie with a pink sweater and black coat is exactly the color combination I want to try.

The pink softens the dark coat; the burgundy keeps it from looking overly sweet. I would choose a knit that feels comfortable against my forehead and covers my ears, then keep the scarf simple. There is enough personality here without adding a matching print to every available surface.

A tailored coat can be lovely for a short, dry outing. For a colder, longer, or wetter day, I would use a suitable insulated coat instead and keep the same colors. The photograph is a styling idea, not a temperature rating.

For football sidelines, I would keep the pink-and-burgundy palette but choose outerwear for the forecast and the time spent sitting or standing outdoors. A rink roof takes rain out of the equation; an outdoor game does not. I would bring an extra removable layer and check that my coat covers my lap when seated.

Charmed Tip: Try the hat with the coat collar and hood. If you keep pulling it off because the fit irritates you, its color is not enough reason to buy it.

Pink catches the daylight, burgundy frames the face, and the little market lights make an ordinary Saturday feel dressed for.

LOOK 05 / RINK DAYS, WITH FOOTWEAR CHECKED FOR THE CONDITIONS

5. Burgundy Coat and Pink Winter Boots

The formula: Burgundy insulated coat + black knit and trousers + rose scarf or hat + pink winter boots with verified insulation and fit

Cute boots matter to me, but warm feet are the part I will not bargain away. Standing near the ice, I feel much more comfortable when my feet are warm. That is why I would choose the boots before deciding how the rest of this outfit comes together.

And yes, I want the pink boots. Against black jeans and a burgundy coat, a blush lace-up pair becomes the little detail that makes the whole outfit feel more like me. I would repeat that rose once in a hat or scarf, then leave the rest alone. We are going to the rink, not auditioning for a matching gift set.

The pale pink lace-up boots in my original hockey-mom article are the visual direction I mean: a soft pink upper, laces, and a lighter sole. The SOREL Kinetic Impact Caribou Plus shown there offers another direction, with a cream upper and rose-toned sculptural sole. Those are two different looks, not two versions of the same boot. The first feels sweet and outdoorsy; the second brings more sporty attitude.

I would use the blush pair to soften black denim, or let the cream-and-rose look brighten an all-black outfit. Before making either an exact shopping recommendation, I would confirm the current model, color, insulation, sizing, and availability. The generated outfit image illustrates those color ideas, not the exact boots sold in either listing.

I would check the manufacturer details for insulation and weather protection, then try the boots with the socks I intend to wear. A fluffy cuff alone is not proof of warmth, and a heavy-looking sole is not a guarantee on ice. More sock is not automatically better if it makes the boot tight.

Charmed Tip: Check toe room, heel hold, and comfort with your winter socks. Choose footwear for the route as well as the outfit, and do not assume any ordinary boot is slip-proof.

Blush laces, creamy soles, and a little rose against the black denim. The boots get to be the fun part, too.

LOOK 06 / CASUAL RINK DAYS AND WEEKEND LOUNGING

6. Burgundy Matching Sweats and a Rose Coat

The formula: Burgundy sweatshirt + matching joggers + rose insulated coat + pink boots + knit hat

Burgundy matching sweats under a rose coat might be my favorite color idea here. The deeper shade gives the soft pink some contrast, and the whole thing feels relaxed without looking accidental. Add the pink boots and a hat, and that is plenty. I do not need jewelry competing with the coffee cup.

I would choose a relaxed crewneck and tapered joggers for an easy fit inside the coat. A zip-front sweatshirt is another option when temperature changes are the bigger concern. If buying separates, check that both belong to the same fabric collection; two pieces called burgundy can arrive looking like they have never met.

A good-looking set still needs a practical fit check. I would inspect the waistband stitching, pocket openings, and inside seams, then check the care label before washing. Photos cannot tell me how it will pill or recover at the knees, and a high price does not prove durability. For a long cold rink session, add suitable layers rather than treating sweats as weather protection.

Charmed Tip: Do not size up automatically for a cozy look. Compare both top and bottom measurements, and check that the coat has room for the sweatshirt without flattening everything underneath.

Wine-dark sweats, rose quilting, and pale pink boots: soft enough to relax in, with enough color to make the early start feel less ordinary.

LOOK 07 / HOCKEY MORNINGS AND FOOTBALL AFTERNOONS

7. The Repeat Hockey or Football Game Outfit

The formula: Your better coat + your comfortable straight jeans + a pink or burgundy knit + warm boots + a hat you enjoy wearing

The seventh outfit is permission to repeat the useful pieces. I do not need seven winter coats to have seven ways of getting dressed. I would start with the coat and boots that earn their space, then change the knit and the color near my face.

Rose under a black coat feels different from burgundy under the same coat. Add a pink hat one day and a burgundy one the next if you already own both. The point is a small wardrobe with choices, not a shopping list disguised as a personality.

For a quiet errand day I would keep the inner layers light enough to adjust easily. For another long visit to the rink, I would add the appropriate base layer and insulation. Repeating the silhouette is useful; repeating the same warmth level regardless of the day is not.

The repeat outfit works for both sports, but I would not assume the conditions match. For a football game I would check wind and rain as well as temperature; for the rink I would plan for the long, chilly sit. The outfit formula repeats, while the actual layers and footwear can change.

Charmed Tip: Photograph the combinations you like while trying them on. Note which socks, base layers, and boots fit together so the next early start involves fewer decisions.

The Purchase I Would Take My Time With

I would start with the coat if that is the weak link in my wardrobe, then make sure the boots are ready for the hours I spend near the ice. The pink knit can wait if those two things are not doing their job. But the hat is coming with me.
